Famelab UK is back!

Calling all scientists and engineers with a passion for public engagement to participate in FameLab UK 2016!

  • FameLab is inviting scientists, mathematicians and engineers across the UK to take part in its flagship science communications competition. The Midlands regional heats will be held at the University of Birmingham campus on 7th January 2016.
  • Contestants have just 3 minutes to convey a scientific concept of their choice in an engaging way to non-scientists.
  • They will be judged by leading researchers, media personalities and science policy makers on the content, clarity and charisma of their presentation.
  • The UK winner receives £1000 cash prize and £750 to spend on a science communication activity and goes on to compete against over 25 other contestants from around the world at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival in June 2016.

How does it work?

To enter FameLab you must be over 21 years old and working in or studying science, technology, engineering, medicine or maths in the UK and be a UK or EU resident.

The winners of the nine regional finals will go through to the UK National Final in April 2016 in London.

To prepare them for the UK final, successful contestants will take part in a weekend Masterclass at the Cheltenham Park Hotel, 1-3 April 2016, delivered by expert trainers specialising in media and communication skills.

The winner of FameLab UK will also go on to participate in an International Final at the Cheltenham Festival In June 2016

What happens if you win?

All finalists receive intensive coaching in a weekend Masterclass at the Cheltenham Park Hotel, 1-3 April 2016, delivered by experts in the industry.

The UK winner will receive £1,000 for themselves and up to £750 to spend on a science communication activity, whether it’s attending a conference, further training or developing a new event or activity.  Two runners up will each receive £200 and up to £300 to spend on a science communication activity. There will also be an audience vote, with the winner receiving a bottle of champagne.

Past winners of FameLab have gone on to travel the globe, perform in festivals and feature on national TV and radio, and many combine public-facing activity with on-going research.
