Public Engagement with Research Committee (PERC) warmly invites you to join our 3rd annual Public Engagement with Research Day on Thursday 15th December, 2016. PER Day is our signature whole-day event dedicated to sharing best practice, skills and learning around public engagement. This event is also a space to celebrate and recognize the PER efforts of our research community whilst offering opportunities to open up dialogue about the future direction of PER at Birmingham with senior management, external research funders and other PER advocates. We hope you will seize this opportunity to contribute and take part in our away day. This is your chance to ask the University, funders and other academics the how, why, what, when, who of public engagement. This lively event is meant to support, inspire and thought-provoke!
Last year’s event was fully booked and this year we are aiming for an even bigger and better turnout. Register now and don’t miss out! Our theme for this year is ‘Interdisciplinary Public Engagement’.
The event is open to all University of Birmingham research staff and students as well as professionals services staff. We welcome and encourage research labs/groups and other university teams who wish to join us for an away day focused on PER. The Voices of War & Peace AHRC WW1 Engagement Centre has collaborated with a wide range of community groups on WW1 projects since January 2014 and will reflect on that process as it prepares for the next phase of commemorative activity to 2019.

Option 1: How to create a PER demo in 30 minutes
Join Debbie Ringham (Research Engagement Manager, Cancer Research UK) and PER Officer Dr Caroline Gillett to run through some internally developed props, followed by an interactive challenge which will bring together your interdisciplinary ideas to work into a coherent proposition for a new demo/activity that PERC will look to fund.
Option 2: Evaluation of TV programming (in Room G07 next door)
Join Dr Melissa Grant (Senior Lecturer, Dentistry) and Lucy Vernall (Academic Ideas Lab) for their session from the Engage 2016 Conference. This will look at innovative ways of evaluating the impact of your contribution to or /appearances on TV programmes. If evaluation of public engagement impact is important to you (and it should be!) then don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about Melissa and Lucy’s methods.
16:30 – 17:30 Xmas Celebration & Postgraduate Public Engagement Busking
Enjoy a seasonal drink and mince pie whilst networking with colleagues and leave inspired by taking part in a playful hour of science-arts-humanities ‘busking’ demos courtesy of our postgraduate community.
