Jo Parish is a molecular cell biologist and group leader of the human papillomavirus (HPV) persistence research group. She is a Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences, with a specific interest in the molecular interplay between viruses and their host that contribute to persistence of infection and human diseases such as cancer. Jo’s experience in public engagement includes working with schools to develop microbiology-based projects and participation in the National Science and Engineering Competition at the Big Bang fair for the past 5 years. She is interested in extending theses activities and working with local science museums to develop interactive displays highlighting viruses and viral diseases to lay audiences. Jo is also interested in engaging with MPs and civil servants to understand how science and academia influence science policy. In 2012, Jo spent a week in Westminster shadowing MP Giesla Stuart and has since participated in various debates within Parliament including Voice of the Future and a roundtable discussion at the Conservative Party conference.
