British Science Week – Grants for working with Schools and Community groups

Posted by gillecdton November 10, 2016in Upcoming opportunities

Next year’s British Science Week (BSW) is happening on the 10-19 March 2017. It will feature thousands of STEM events and activities across the country – and you can be a part of it.

The British Science Association is offering two grant schemes to support any BSW activities that you or your organisation(s) want to run.

Applications are now open and will close on 21 November 2016 at 5pm.

Kick Start Grants

This scheme offers grants for schools in challenging circumstances to organise their own events as part of British Science Week. There are two options available:

Kick Start grant: A grant of up to £300 for your school to run an activity

Kick Start More grant: A grant of up to £700 for your school to host a science event or activity which involves your students and the local community

Community Grants

This scheme offers £500-1000 grants for community groups that work directly with audiences who are traditionally under-represented and currently not engaged in science activity. Our definition of groups that are underrepresented in science includes:

  • people who are Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME)
  • people with low socio economic status (SES)
  • young people with anti-social behaviour, including those not in education, employment or training (NEET)
  • people with a disability, defined as a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term effect on someone’s ability to do normal daily activities (Equalities Act 2010)
  • girls and women
  • people living in a remote and rural location

How to apply

Applying for a grant is simple. You will need to register your event or activity and complete all sections of the form, then you’ll be offered the option of applying for a grant. Don’t worry if you don’t yet have all the details for the event or activity you are requesting funding towards – just register with as much information as you have.

Engaging the UK public with the big issues of environmental science. New public engagement funding call

NERC is inviting proposals under this programme for public engagement projects costing up to £20k that must be delivered between January and end of March 2017.

A call information event will be held on Thursday 22 September 2016. Applications to attend this event will close at 16:00 on Monday 12 September. Please see the Announcement of Opportunity document below for more information.

This call initiates delivery of NERC’s public engagement strategy through:

  • engaging members of the UK public with relevant contemporary issues of environmental science through delivery of environmental science public engagement activity
  • building public engagement capacity in the environmental science research community and providing opportunities for early career researchers and PhD students to develop skills, practice and embed public engagement in their research careers
  • building partnerships between researchers and publics or public-facing groups, and between research organisations.

Projects will focus on broad, contemporary issues of environmental science, not specific research projects or grants. Total funding of up to £200K is available for this call.

An additional budget is available to provide matched funding up to the total value of the proposal (an additional maximum £20k) to provide training and support for the involvement of early-career researchers and PhD students in public engagement projects.

The closing date for proposals is 16:00 on 3 November 2016.

Applicants are referred to the Announcement of Opportunity document below for further details.

World War One and its legacy

Posted by Ditte Hedegaardon April 23, 2014April 23, 2014in Funding, Raising Awareness, Upcoming opportunities

In 2014 the world marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. The four years of the war between 1914 and 1918 remain one of the most significant periods in recent British history, affecting almost everyone in the UK and in all the countries involved. At its end a new world order had emerged and we are still understanding and absorbing the implications of the momentous changes the War brought about.

The centenary of the First World War in 2014 represents therefore a significant act of commemoration both in the UK and internationally. The Imperial War Museum is leading activities in this area and the AHRC, in partnership with IWM, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the BBC and other organisations, is working to ensure that arts and humanities research plays a central role in the commemoration, bringing new perspectives and interpretations to bear on our understanding of the War and its legacy, sparking contemporary resonances and inspiring public interest.

The AHRC has also launched a blog, Beyond the Trenches, reflecting on researching the First World War.

The AHRC is funding several different WWI project read more about the projects and how you can get involved underneath.
